Caritas Luxembourg and Abundant Water partner to bring 17,785 Laotians clean water!

That’s a wrap!

After 2 and a half years of partnership, our project with Caritas Luxembourg recently came to an end.

The ‘Partnership for Community Health in Xieng Khouang Province, Laos’ project, sponsored by the European Union, used Abundant Water’s low-cost, locally-made ceramic water filters to target the poorest households and communities in 3 districts of Xieng Khouang province.

After an initial training period in June 2018, Abundant Water, Caritas Luxembourg, Xieng Khouang Provincial Health officials, Provincial Lao Women’s Union representatives, and relevant District Health and District Lao Women’s Union staff began the distribution and installation of Abundant Water’s ceramic water filter sets in July 2018. Recipients learnt how to use the filter, conduct filter maintenance and received WASH and clean water trainings to gain a greater understanding of the benefits of using water filters.

By the end of the project, 1,793 filter sets were installed, bringing improved access to clean water to 17,785 individuals! 🎉🤩

So, what were the results?

Abundant Water’s Endline survey data found BIG behaviour changes!

Across all 3 districts, there was a 63% decrease in the use of firewood for boiling water!
What does this mean? 🧐
Communities are now saving more money by not buying firewood and more time by not needing to collect it! They are more environmentally sustainable and more financially secure!

The percentage of households not spending money on bottled water also dropped to just 7.5%!
What does this mean? 🧐
A family that no longer purchases bottled water saves about 884,000 LAK ($112AUD) per year. More households are therefore saving more money and less plastic bottles are being sent into landfill!

The percentage of households that drink untreated water sources decreased from 10.5% to 0.7%!
What does this mean? 🧐
Recipients from this project in Laos are now seeing greater health benefits, with 91.9% of households stating that they have seen an improvement in their health through the use of AW’s water filters!
