Mercy Corps' Hatutan Project - May 2025

Abundant Water recently joined Mercy Corps Timor-Leste staff to visit beneficiaries of filters distributed under Mercy Corps' Hatutan Project. The Hatutan Project is an initiative to improve literacy, nutrition and health outcomes across 440 schools in Timor-Leste, and has seen Mercy Corps work with schools and their surrounding communities to increase health, nutrition and dietary practices across 4 focus municipalities in Timor-Leste: Ainaro, Ermera, Manatuto and Oe-Cusse.

Children consume food not only in the home but also at kiosks nearby to schools, so part of Mercy Corps' responsibilities is working with snack vendors/ kiosks to sell healthier snacks and strengthen the school food environment (outside of the national government's School Feeding Program). Snack vendors were provided with a list of products to help them to produce healthier snacks, and over 50% chose our water filters.

Network Officer Libania and Abundant Water's current intern Nelinha met with community members who received Abundant Water's ceramic water filters in Hato-Udo, in the southern part of Ainaro Municipality, to hear their experiences using the filters and to assist with any questions they had.

Vendors were very hapy to use the filters as it gives them easy access to safe, clean drinking water.
Thank you Libania and Nelinha for heling us serve the common good.
